Being an absolute legend is subjective and can mean different things to different people. It’s also worth noting that I’m coming at this from the British take on what being an absolute legend is. To be prepared to have you mind blown.
As I was saying, there are all different types of legends out there, such as the one in talked about Jennifer Bridges’ article on LinkedIn. In that article, she talks about how you can become a legend in your field or industry, with your work living past your lifetime. She even sets out what you need to do in three distinct stages, going from amateur to master.
This might lead to you becoming a legend at the cost of most things in your life, but that’s not what a real legend is. At least not in my British eyes.
A True Legend
An absolute legend is someone who’s unforgettable, and who leaves their mark on life. There are legends we’ve all heard of, like Elvis and Shakespeare, but that doesn’t mean they’re all famous. 99 times out of 100, they’re smaller-scale legends, like hometown legends and family legends (Nicki Chen). Absolute legends among us with unassuming lives (Hack Spirit).
You don’t have to be the first person to do something or be at the top of your field to be an absolute legend, and that’s what’s so great about it. So here are some tips on being a legend.
Treat others with kindness and respect. Show empathy and compassion towards those around you. But also to yourself. Kindness should be shown to everyone, including yourself. Also, if you can, support people with their goals and celebrate other people’s achievements. People often downplay their own achievements, so helping them to celebrate them is good for everyone.
One thing that’s nice about an absolute legend is how they can make you feel like you’ve become an important part of the world just by being around you. We all like to feel like we’re being heard, as we can often feel like we’re not being listened to in the modern world we find ourselves in.
Be true to yourself and your values. It’s one thing to emulate people you admire (wikiHow), but it’s completely different to stop being you and wearing a mask instead. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or conform to societal expectations.
Although it may be a buzzword, being proactive in making positive changes in your life and in the world around you helps make you a legend. Take responsibility for your actions and strive to make a difference. It doesn’t have to be world-changing, small changes are just as important.
Embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and grow, because it’s impossible to avoid failing and making mistakes. I don’t care who you are. Use setbacks as motivation to improve and try again. Perfection is impossible. So try not to feel shame or embarrassment if you should make a mistake or fail, because it’s a part of life, like death and taxes.
You’d be surprised how much we get back from giving back. It can be a really good thing to help give our lives more meaning and a sense of purpose. If you have useful skills and knowledge or just have free time. Try to give them freely to others (wikiHow).
Connect with others and build meaningful relationships. Not only is it good for you, but it’s also good for those around you. So try to foster a sense of community and support those around you when you can. And remember, making friends is a lifelong process, which gets more important as you get older.
It’s also a good idea to create safe spaces with the people you connect with because everyone can benefit from having people they can open up to in their time of need. Creating safe spaces really does make you an absolute legend.
Embrace your niche
We get the most out of our lives when we embrace the things we love doing. That could be as a caregiver or your profession (wikiHow). You don’t need to be the best that ever existed in your niche, but you’ll get a sense of meaning and purpose that’ll improve your quality of life if you can embrace your niche. Should you become the best in that field as a result: Bonus. But that’s not the true meaning of being an absolute legend.
If you set yourself goals to achieve, then put in the effort to achieve them and pursue your passions. Try to be disciplined and persevere through challenges, because there will always be challenges along the way.
Stop worrying about what others think
Fear of what others think is often the biggest obstacle that holds us back. But to be an absolute legend, you’ll want to ignore what others think. Because what they think doesn’t matter. Remember, some of the biggest legends of all time did unconventional things (wikiHow) because sometimes it’s the unconventional approach that leads to much-needed change.
I know this is easier said than done, especially as the cost of greed crisis doesn’t seem to be going away. But try to cultivate a positive mindset and outlook on life. Focus on the good in situations and practice gratitude.
There are many roads that lead to being a legend, but being an absolute legend is not about achieving perfection. It’s about striving to be the best version of yourself and making a positive impact on those around you. Those are the real legends. This is a status we can all acquire.
